Peugeot Engines Information

Over the years a wide range of Peugeot petrol engines and Peugeot diesel engines were used in the 306 range. Here you will find a list of the most common engines in use along with any technical specifications I was able to find on them.

Peugeot Petrol Engines

Peugeot TU3MCZ/TU3FMCZ/TU3JP

The smallest petrol engine commonly used in the 306, the TU3 engines were 1.4 litre (1360cc) 8 valve petrol units capable of 75bhp (55kW). Earlier models were single point injection, however the engine was revised in the phase 2 306 models to use a multi point injection system (TU3JP varient).
The TU3 engines used in the Peugeot 306 are also used in the Peugeot 106, Peugeot 205, Peugeot 206 and Peugeot Partner Van.

Peugeot TU5JPZ

The TU5 Peugeot engines are 1.6 litre (1587 cc) petrol units producing 90bhp (65kW). The have 8 valves and use multi point fuel injection. A similar engine is used in the Peugeot 206 although with a different gearbox setup.

Of all the petrol 306 engines the 1.6 litre is probably the most common, offering a sensible balance of power and fuel economy.

Peugeot XU7JPZ

The XU7JPZ is a 1.8 litre (1761 cc) 8 valve engine which produces 103bhp (74kW). It uses a multi point fuel injection system. This engine was commonly fitted to Peugeot 306 models with automatic gearboxes.

This 1.8 litre unit was considered by some to be a lame duck, producing just slightly more power than the 1.6 litre engine and being a lot less economical with fuel. This engine was also used in the Peugeot 405.

Peugeot XU7JP4Z

This engine is an improvement on the XU7JPZ and was fitted to later model phase 2 and 3 Peugeot 306 models. This 1.8 litre (1761 cc) engine is a 16-valve multi point fuel injection unit producing 112bhp (81kW). The extra valves help this engine in the power and economy stakes and made it a much more suitable engine for the 306 range. The XU7JP4Z was also used in the Peugeot 406.

Peugeot XU10J2CZ

The XU10J2CZ was fitted to the more sporty phase 1 306 models including the XSi and XT models. It is a 2 litre (1998 cc) 8 valve multi point fuel injection unit producing 123bhp (89kw). This engine is not the most economical of the range but it was probably not designed for economy, as the XU10J2CZ has plenty of poke and low end torque. This engine was also used in the Peugeot 405 and a very similar unit was used in the Peugeot 605.

Peugeot XU10J4R

The phase 2 306 models received a remodelled 2 litre engine in the form of the XU10J4R. The XU10J4R engine is a 2 litre (1997 cc) 16-valve multi point fuel injection unit producing 135bhp (97kW). This engine was commonly used on the 306 XSi model and was also used in the Peugeot 406 and Peugeot 605 ranges.

Peugeot XU10J4/XU10J4Z

Fitted exclusively to the Peugeot 306 s16 the XU10J4Z engine produces either 150bhp (108kW) or 155bhp (111kW) depending on the injection management system used. This 2.0 litre (1998 cc) unit has 16 valves and uses multi point fuel injection.

The s16 engine was very similar in design to the Mi16 engines used in the Peugeot 405 and these engines are extremely popular for engine conversions especially on Peugeot 205 and Peugeot 309 models. The XU10J4Z also shares many design features with the legendary T16 engine.

Peugeot XU10J4RS

The XU10J4RS is the most powerful engine in the Peugeot 306 range. It was mated with a BE3 6-speed gearbox and was fitted to the Peugeot 306 GTI-6 and Peugeot 306 Rallye models. This 2.0 litre (1998 cc) 16 valve unit features multi point fuel injection and develops 167bhp (120kW).

The Peugeot XU10J4RS petrol engine makes for a very good engine upgrade for those who want more power without selling their existing car and this results in prices for second hand engine to remain high. It is noted that the XU10J4RS was also used by Citroen in the Citroen Xsara VTS coupe, an often overlooked alternative to the Peugeot 306 GTi.

Peugeot Diesel Engines

Peugeot XUD9Y/XUD9AY

This engine was commonly fitted to the lower spec Peugeot 306 diesel range and is a naturally aspirated 1.9 litre (1905 cc) 8 valve engine. The XUD9Y produces 65bhp (47kW) and the XUD9AY produces 70bhp (51kW). Although not the fastest engine in the Peugeot 306 range this engine is one of the most fuel economic and also has one of the lowest CO2 emission levels.

Peugeot XUD9TE Engine Peugeot XUD9TE

The Peugeot XUD9TE engine is a 1.9 litre (1905 cc) 8 valve turbocharged diesel engine delivering 92bhp (67kW). The XUD9TE was commonly fitted to the Peugeot 306 sports diesel range including the Peugeot 306 Dturbo.

This intercooled turbo-diesel unit can be easily tuned using no specialist tools and provides a basis for huge tuning potential, with some people acheiving upwards of 160bhp. Despite all this potential power fuel economy remains good and emissions for the XUD9TE engine are significantly less than an equivalent petrol engine.

Peugeot DW10TD

The Peugeot DW10TD engine is a common rail turbocharged diesel engine producing 90bhp (66kW). This engine was commonly badged as HDi and appears in the Peugeot 306 range from 1999. This 2.0 litre (1996 cc) 8 valve engine has the fuel injection controlled by an ECU. Unlike the XUD9TE diesel engine, the Peugeot DW10TD engine does not have an intercooler.

As with the XUD9TE it replaced the DW10TD is a good candidate for tuning, however the fuel pump and turbo are controlled by the on board computer and can not be modified without professional tuning equipment. With the right modifications the Peugeot HDi engine is capable of more than 170bhp.

The DW10TD diesel engine was also commonly used in the Peugeot 206 and Peugeot 307 range. The DW10ATED engine is extremely similar in design with the addition of an intercooler and increased power output of 110bhp (80kW).
