i done a compression test today in work, and was woundering if you should do it when the engine is cold or should it be hot to get the true reading?. when i did the test cold it was down on 2 and 4, by about 25psi each

i always thought it was done when cold, the compression should be the same anyway

I've only ever done it cold, as hot plug's are a bitch....
the compression should be very similar hot or cold, possibly slightly more hot as everythings at running temp's how they are designed to work best.
but its more of a comparative test between the pot's than an overall psi per pot test as the gauge your using probably hasn't been calibrated in the last 6month's......but it will give you a good indication of any prob's

well after a long hard thought i decided to do my head gasket meself, plus am saving meself some money doing it meself. considering we were quite in work this afternoon i booked half a day holiday and start to strip me engine down.4hour 30minutes later the head is all off now and been sent away for skim and pressure tested.on the process of stripping it down i notice the timing belt had start to chew itself apart,(stripped it just in time, and the belt had gone slack). found the cause for it,was due to the pulley and teeth pinon worn.

so got load of peugeot parts on order which i should receive friday. i got some pics on me phone but for some reason it wont let me install me phone on the computer.
that the update for today

Surely if the cambelt was "slack", that would affect the valve opening durations/timing, therefore messing with the compression....

Just thinking out loud, so feel free to shout me down ;)

i think it did martin, not 100% sure. suppose that would explan why i loss some power. when i did a compression test i was down slightly on 2 cyclinder, which i thought would be down to the head gasket, but the cambelt might be something to do with it as well.

yes am glad the head gasket has gone in a way ,because i could of been a lot worse and a different story

So was there any evidence on the gasket itself showing it to be blown?

update- after stripping it down on wednesday after then sending the head away, and work was little quit so i booked half a day holiday and i picked the head back up after all the work it had done.

head list
1)got the head pressure test and skimmed
2)had all the valves taken out and check them, which he then re-recut them and grinded them in with new seals to
.
so today i gave the head a final clean before rebuilding it back up, and i have to say i actually enjoyed building the head back up. good learning curve. then cleaned all the block up still it was nice and clean. still got a fair bit of work left to do,but here couple of pics
